Messy buns were a staple style in the 2000s, so we’re here for the Y2K nostalgia Rena Calhoun created for K. Devery Jacobs Critic’s Choice Awards look. "The style and color placement of this red carpet look was inspired by the 2000s rave scene and plays on the contrast of black and white in the outfit," Rena says.

Here, she breaks down how you can achieve this look behind the chair.

Step 1: Prep the Hair
On clean, towel-dried hair, saturate the scalp with Volumizing Primer—this will create memory for a better hold—parting the hair to distribute the product evenly in precise sections. Add Healing Oil to the ends, so they look shiny and healthy.

Step 2: Blow Dry

Rough dry with your hands on high speed and medium heat until the hair is about 90% dry. Use a flat brush to quickly smooth out the hair, focusing on sealing the ends.

Step 3: Extensions (Optional)

Clip-in extensions are a great way to add a pop of color without compromising the health of the hair. Here, we used three separate extension pieces, about 3” in width.

Placement is totally up to you. Take a small ½” section and backcomb using a fine tooth comb, then lightly mist 6-in-1 Style Guard Hairspray for hold. Place the comb of the clip into the backcombing for guaranteed security and lock into place. Repeat.

Step 4: The Buns

This look consists of two smaller knots in the back, slightly askew, and a bigger knot towards the nape of the neck. The extensions are placed in the sections you place your knots.

Spray Texturizing Spray throughout to give yourself a bit of grip while you’re working.

Section a large piece of hair on the left side of the back of the head; split that section into two and tie them together, as if you’re tying a knot. Repeat on the opposite side and around the back of the head as many times as you feel is visually necessary to achieve the right shape and length (for the ends that will be left out.) Secure with pins.

Lastly, repeat the last knot closer to the nape of the neck to preserve the length through the center back.

Finish off the look with a mist of 6-in-1 Style Guard Hairspray all over to lock everything in.
