Editors and beauty experts are abuzz with Jennifer Garner’s fresh new chop––the style our creative director dubbed “The Jen G cut for Gen Z.” Part of its popularity is due to the fact that it's an effortless lob that works at every age and stage. It’s fresh, effortless, and uncomplicated. So we tapped the Master of the Modern Bob, stylist and salon owner, Chris Jones, to give us a step-by-step tutorial on how you can give clients this buzzworthy cut.

The Cut

This tousled lob with texturized long layers for volume sits on the collarbone and is complimented by Bardot bangs to frame the face. This haircut is 85% one length; without subtle texturizing and layering, it can feel bulky and lack movement.

To create a soft/blunt perimeter, blow dry the hair straight and smooth (light flat iron if needed). Combing the hair into its natural fall point, cut your line with minimal tension at zero elevation. This will give you a strong line that has a hint of softness.

Texturizing through the perimeter should be subtle to avoid the haircut becoming too layered. "I prefer to use a sliding technique, so the haircut remains soft and seamless when worn straight," explains Chris.

Soft face-framing layers starting around the upper lip add movement, "which always looks great straight or curled."

Styling

Start with a nickel-size dollop of Virtue 6-in-1 Styler, spreading like hand cream in the palms of your hands, then apply from roots to ends to hydrate and protect from heat styling.

To bring out natural texture and volume, start drying with a diffuser. Once the root is 60% dry, slowly move toward the ends—this is to ensure the ends are not overly dehydrated.

Once her hair is dry, section it and use a medium-size iron to create waves (Chris' favorite is a 1.25" curling iron). Instead of wrapping the hair completely around the cylinder, wave the section in opposing directions to create a soft, natural look that compliments the texture. With this technique, it is important not to pull the hair as you are waving it so that you don’t pull out the texture.

Next, apply Virtue Healing Oil from mid to ends to create extra shine and finish.

Finally, to complete this look, use a healthy amount of Virtue Texturizing Spray to create an airy and voluminous finish to the hair. This Texturizing Spray creates the perfectly undone, tousled look we’re all looking for with this style.

Shake the curls out and go!
